Join Razom and Natalia Khanenko-Friesen for a conversation with Yevheniia Podobna, a Ukrainian war journalist. Yevheniia will explore how the perspective of a female war reporter helps her to tell unique stories that are happening to Ukrainian women and the broader population.

About Yevheniia Podobna

Ukrainian journalist, documentarian, writer and scholar, Yevheniia has been covering russian aggression against Ukraine for ten years. Yevheniia’s book “Girls Cutting Their Locks” features memories of 25 female warriors who have been defending Ukraine in the period of 2014-2018. This book received multiple awards including Ukraine’s top prize – Shevchenko Prize in Journalism. After the beginning of the full-scale invasion, Yevheniia has recorded stories, memories and testimonies focusing on the experiences of Ukrainian women. She is the author of several documentaries and books, as well as a war crimes researcher.

About Natalia Khanenko-Friesen

Natalia Khanenko-Friesen is an oral historian and cultural anthropologist, serving as the Director of the Canadian Institute of Ukrainian Studies and Huculak Chair in Ukrainian Culture and Ethnography, both in the Faculty of Arts, University of Alberta, Canada. Her research interests and scholarly work focus on vernacular ego-documentation, oral history, testimony research, diasporic and ethnic identities. She is a co-president of Ukrainian Oral History Association.
